Why is it hard for US poker players to play at most online poker sites?
The US is still the country with the most online poker players in the world although it is a bit more tricky for these guys to find a place to play.
Because of some confusing legal legislation passed over the last 6 years, there are a huge amount of US poker players who have been left very unsure about the legality of playing poker online.
Now before going and making your first real money deposit online, as a US poker player you should understand a few things and one of the most major law changes is something called the UIGEA. It may be worth also checking your individual State law and some of the ins and outs of depositing money on US online poker sites.
Is it Against The Law To Play Online Poker in the US?
No. The major confusion comes from a bill that was passed called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
This new piece of legislation was passed by the Bush administration back in 2006 as part of an unrelated port securities bill which many online, US poker poker players consider to of been undemocratically and unjustly passed.
The UIGEA did end up making some of the large poker sites leave the US market but this was mainly due to concerns over the legislation. Online poker players are not doing anything illegal or breaking the law by playing online poker, the law is more targeting payment processors.
There are still some fantastic online poker rooms for US players and still a huge amount of top online poker players coming out of the US that are grinding away on US friendly poker sites.

The UIGEA was passed into law by President George Bush in October, 2006, and makes it illegal for online gambling sites (not just poker sites) to accept funds or wagers from the United States if the underlying gambling activity violates existing federal, state or tribal law.
The law does not make the player liable in any way, but makes the site liable for accepting funds or wagers associated with illegal Internet gambling.
As an online poker player located in the United States, you are not breaking the UIGEA or any other federal law, but you may be violating state or tribal law depending on the laws of the state or Native American Reservation where you reside.
